PRINCIPAL

Capt. Dr. K. Karthik is a “sailor by profession and a teacher by passion,” embodying a distinguished blend of extensive seafaring experience and accomplished academic leadership.

He commenced his maritime career at the age of 21 after completing his Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Loyola College, Chennai. An alumnus of the Maritime Training Institute of the Shipping Corporation of India, Powai, he began his sailing career with the Shipping Corporation of India in 1993 and subsequently served with reputed organizations including Wallem Shipmanagement, Anglo-Eastern, West Asia Maritime, and Tolani Shipping, where he rose to the rank of Captain. Over a sailing career spanning more than 16 years, he gained extensive operational exposure across a wide range of vessel types, including crude oil carriers, product tankers, chemical carriers, general cargo ships, and bulk carriers. This diverse experience has provided him with a strong practical foundation in maritime operations, safety, and ship management.

In 2007, he joined AMET University as a visiting faculty member. Within a short period, driven by his passion for teaching and academic engagement, he transitioned into a full-time role on 1st October 2007. Since then, he has held several key academic and administrative positions, including Professor for HND and B.Sc. Nautical Science programmes, Director – Centre for International Relations, and Dean – Post Sea and Ship Simulator Training.

He later served as the Dean and Head of the Department of Nautical Science, where he made significant strategic contributions to academic excellence and institutional development. In recognition of his leadership and vision, he progressed to serve as the Principal of AMET University. He is currently serving as the Principal of AMET Institute of Science and Technology since its establishment in 2023, leading the institution with a strong focus on quality education, innovation, and industry integration.

Capt. Dr. Karthik’s academic credentials reflect his commitment to continuous learning and interdisciplinary advancement. He holds a Ph.D. in Management Studies from AMET University, a Post Graduate Diploma in Artificial Intelligence for Leaders from Great Lakes Institute of Management, a Postgraduate Degree in Yoga for Human Excellence from the University of Madras, and a Diploma in Yoga Therapy from Bharathiar University.

His contributions to the global maritime academic community have earned him international recognition. He has been acknowledged through the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for his role in coordinating the IAMU Students Forum in 2017, underscoring his commitment to fostering global academic collaboration and student engagement.

Beyond academics and administration, he is a strong advocate of holistic development and personal excellence. A marathon runner and certified yoga practitioner, he actively promotes the integration of physical fitness, mental well-being, and professional discipline. His dedication to human excellence is further reflected in his role as Director – Centre for Yoga and Youth Empowerment.
